The Key

Writer's sit in front of the computer for hours tapping out masterpieces a stroke at a time. The dilemma for most writers is that we work full time day jobs while freelancing, writing novels and how-to books in our spare time. The problem I face is the spare tire I've gained while using my free time to write.

About three months ago I decided to add exercise back into my schedule. I've regularly walked at least four days a weekend but my weight only ping-pongs. I've gained and lost the same four pounds. Three months of faithfully walking and basically nothing to show for it. I knew the answer, but didn't want to face it.

Not only do I work full time but writing projects pull me in various directions each week. My writing book Pumping Your Muse is due out within the next month. Little did I realize the PR involved in launching a book nor the opportunities that would arise. Now, I'm putting together and online course and scheduling workshops. I also have the responsibility of a monthly column while working on my current novel, historical shorts from people's lives from the good old days. This is in addition to editing responsibilities for two publishrs and my own editing company, not to mention keeping up with the submission process required to keep my freelace career moving forward.

Why mention all this? I thought they made for good excuses for the thirty pounds of pasted onto my small frame over the last two years. The key to continuing to write and losing weight is not only exercise but what I put in my mouth. Quick, easy snacks lure me to eat unhealthy food filled with empty calories. After three months of trying to lose weight on my own, I called a friend struggling with the same problem. We agreed to be accountable to one another. This past Monday a group of four of us united with the same goal. Hold one another accountable for what we eat. We not only met but measured and weighed. For the next six weeks we are limiting our calorie inake to 1,000-1,200 (we are all women).

I'm a goal-oriented person. People ask all the time how I get all the things done that I do. The answer is in having a plan. This blog is one of those goals as I go through the process of losing 25-30 pounds while keeping my writing moving forward. I figure there are other writers (or others) out there that may have tips to share or that may benefit from something learned here in the coming weeks.
