Common Sense

I've looked into serving sizes a bit more. How big do you think a serving of mashed potatoes would be? Imagine my surprise when I saw 1/3 cup equaled a serving. Calories come to 66.40 calories. However, that serving size is listed under fast food mashed potoates. For the old fashioned type, mashing potatoes made with whole milk: A serving is one cup. Calories 161.70.

I don't know about you, but I need a bit of butter in my potatoes too. Again, one cup is a serving size. With butter added, the calories mount to 222.60 per cup.

Why do I bring this up? Because it's time for us to use some common sense. Look at the above information. If you're fighting the buldge around the middle, what size should your serving be?

Instead of cutting foods out of your diet, learn to control your serving size and calorie intake.

I know exactly what you mean, Donna. One thing that really struck me when I returned here from Ireland was the size of the portions in restaurants. The piles of food cry out, "Eatme! Eat me!" I should follow my mother's advice and eat only until I am sated and not cross over into "stuffed territory." It is all so tempting! One thing I have learned, though: the little cakes and junk food that I enjoyed in my youth no longer hold the same appeal (except Ring Dings!). They now taste false and far too sweet. Oh, well, that's something anyway!

I agree about the taste of those popular childhood snacks. I believe they've changed over time. The fake taste tells us something. I don't even consider them a temptation.

I tend to lean more toward things like homemade cookies and such in times of weakness.
