Eating at the Speed of Life

Chewing is the first step in the digestive process, yet many people shovel, gulp and swallow before the process is complete. Consider your chewing habits. Do you take the time to chew properly, or is your plate nearly empty while the person across from you is still adding seasoning?

Salivary glands produce enzymes and break down starches into smaller molecules. If you don't take time to chew properly you short-circuit this chemical action. As a writer still working a day job, I've found myself eating fast so I can move on to what I need to accomplish next.

How long is long enough? I've heard various numbers, but recently heard of a way to know if you've chewed long enough without counting. Chew long enough to blend your food. If you eat a piece of broccoli, chew it until you can't tell the stalk from the flowerette. Using this method of measuring, take your time. Chew your food.

If you're like me, living a full life ask yourself, when's the last time you sat down to a relaxing meal? Even though we have a lot to get done, it's worth the time to slow down and chew your food. Proper digestion begins in the mouth. The longer you chew, the more exposure to saliva. Take the time, it's worth it in the long run.
