Strategies Not to Gain Weight Over the Holidays
I've given more thought to the problem of weight gain over the holidays and how to avoid it. It's not as easy as saying I'm going to be on a diet. I've been there, done that. I've even successfully eaten sensibly on Thanksgiving day. My real problem... well that's what I want to talk about. The first step is to identify the real problem. We all have weak moments, and today we'll take a moment to discuss what they might be. If we can identify the problem, we'll be more aware of the places we may encounter it so we can customize a plan to thwart the potential pitfall. Not everyone struggling with their weight makes poor diet choices under the same conditions. However, many of us cave in for one or more of the following reasons:
*from habit*peer pressure
*boredom
*stress
My first suggestion to help combat all these reasons is to have quiet time of meditation/prayer everyday. When we think we can overcome these weak moments in our own strength, we may be successful for a while, but when our strength runs out we'll crash and burn. That's not a good plan. Look back at my post on the Healthful Benefits of Meditation. Medication helps to beat the stress of the holiday season which in turn can lower the risk of stuffing your face with holiday goodies by succumbing to external pressures.
During your time of meditation, give attention to your diet. It helps keep food in the right perspective. And as you think about food and your diet, don't just focus on the holiday season. In reality the time frame is just weeks in the year...such a short amount of time to wreak such havoc with your weight. And not just your weight. Think of your health. Taking time to meditate can help you keep food in it's proper place. Instead of making food the central focus of all you do, make it your health. If you don't meditate regularly, make it a habit now.

Hi Donna
First I want to ask how you are after that nasty fall...ouch!
Meditation or a time of daily prayer is so important as you pointed out. Sometimes I forget that I can't do it all on my own and have to rely on God's help. Prayer is one on the most powerful tools that God has given us!
Thanks so much for the reminder.
The picture of the turkey brings to mind something that happened a long time ago. We were raising a turkey for Thanksgiving, but the poor thing was so scrawny that every time my Dad came to visit he would shake his head and ask, "are you sure we're going to have enough turkey to go around?" I always reassured him, but I have to admit I was a bit doubtful myself.
Well, the turkey was too stupid to come out of the rain even though he had shelter and he caught pneumonia and died. We didn't have enough money to buy one from the store so I prayed.
One stormy night (I know, I know purple prose, but oh so fitting) our friends stayed until midnight after a fellowship meeting at our house. We had no sooner gone to bed when they came back and knocked on our door. They had been driving home and saw a white turkey along side the road...then another...and another. Apparantly a truck hauling turkeys to market from the local farms and not latched the cages properly and these poor birds fell out as the truck drove down the road!
Our friends went back and picked up two that were still alive and brought them to our house. We butchered and cleaned them that night.
The turkey God supplied us weighed thirty pounds! It was so big that we had to bake him sitting up in the roaster pan! We called it our road turkey from heaven. LOL

What a great story, Roberta. You should watch for a market for Thanksgiving stories! That one is a winner.

I think that the problem is not avoidance, but confidence. Sometimes things just get so built up in people's minds that the real problem lies there. As for me, I find that I eat before going to parties to avoid any overindulgence and limit myself to a couple of snacks.
