All or Nothing Mindset

We had guests for the weekend and lots of getting together with others...including for meals. All kinds of food sent my meal plans and good intentions flew out the window. Well not all of them, but most of them.

In the past, my all or nothing mindset for my diet plan would put me in a tailspin and it could be a month or more before I'd get back on track. However, that's not a healthy mindset. I've learned that each day is new...well I knew that, but to take hold of the fact that failing one day doesn't mean I'm doomed to fail the next is huge. This is a new day, and I plan to get back on track.

On the horizon, I'm still considering running/walking the 5K race on September 30. We'll see if that happens or not. It's at 6:30 in the evening on a Tuesday. I originally thought it would be on Saturday. I'm also planning another cleanse for October. Especially with all this eating I've done recently. I'm ready to reset my body's digestive system.

So instead of getting stuck in a loop of regrets of what I should of done and how fat I am, I'm going to plan for better health for the future.

Donna,

Of all the things I've learned as I've dieted over the years, the most important one is that there is always tomorrow. Keeping a positive mindset will slow a downward spiral and allow the dieter to regroup before resuming the battle. I've been keeping too many bad things around of late. It's just the mad rush of life that translates into snacking on the run.
I'm regrouping, too. I need to rethink my meals. Obviously, what I'm doing isn't good.
I'm in fear of Halloween. I can smell fresh chocolate through a plastic bag. Buying that stuff is downright suicide for my diet so I can't take advantage of the preholiday candy sales.

sigh. Perhaps this is a topic you could touch upon. How to keep that candy in the bag and how to resist the old stash that's leftover from Halloween.

That's a good idea, Raven. It's something I could learn for myself. My friends visiting from England brought a gift--English chocolate (with raisins and nuts). It was about 8 or 9 inches long and 4 inches wide. And now it is almost gone in 4 days and I'm the only one who tasted it.

As bad as that sounds, there was a time in my life where the whole thing would have been gone in a day or two so the fact that I still have a part of it in the refrigerator is progress...little, itsy, bitsy, teeny progress, but it is heading in the right direction.

Now Donna,

I'm positive that someone must have broken into your house and gnawed off a big portion of that chocolate. Regretably, it wasn't me...I mean fortunately. Ahem...

It was great seeing you on the radio blog. I think you ought to appear as a guest speaker. Talk about how you made the move from partime writer into freelancing full time.

I know I'd love to listen to that.

Hi Donna and Raven,
Looks like Fall is regroup time! I'm going back to Weight Watchers now that I have a handle on what to eat for IBS. My first session will be tomorrow and my oldest daughter may go with me. I tried doing WW on my own, but kept slipping up, although my weight is still dropping ounce by ounce. It seems I need the support of a group and to have somebody else stand there and look at my weight as I get on the scale!

Raven, I get around the Halloween candy by not handling it at all. My husband buys it and my teenage daughter hands it out. Leftovers go in the bags of my grandkids when they come back to count their goodies. I use to give out homemade caramel apples, bags of popcorn and even unshelled nuts as alternatives, but now-a-days with all the food contamination scares it would just end up in the trash.

Whenever I end up with chocolate, I wrap it well and put it in the freezer, that way I can't smell or see it. When a craving comes up, I take a small piece. The freezer makes it cold and hard so I can't eat it fast. By the time I'm done savoring it the craving is usually gone! I suppose it would work on other candies too.

Good for you Donna, you are making progress! Somebody said, "You can't stop life from kicking you, but you can determine the direction you will go in."
Keep up the great work!

Great idea Roberta!

I think I'll try your freezer idea this year. First, I'll try to get rid of as much of the stuff as as possible.

I could use a support group. I'm pretty much on my own. You know how easy it is to feel down about it all.

Anyway, I'm trying again.

Hi Raven
Good for you for trying again! You are in the right place for positive support. Donna has great tips, info and inspiration. We all struggle, but when you have good company it's a hundred times easier!
