No Sugar Headache

Meant to stop by yesterday and report on the weekend, but I had such a headache I only did what was necessary. I'm going through sugar withdrawal. Its not that I never plan to have sugar again, but it is one of the things I know triggers me to eat more than I need, and I've done that yo-yo bounce back where I've gained back the five pounds I'd lost. So for now, I'm not eating sugar--no dessert, snacks, drinks, etc. if they have sugar.

Last night I attended a writer's workshop and was asked to bring cookies or something. I made a pan of chocolate brownies and a pan of butterscotch brownies and I didn't even lick the spoon! Plus as I cut those moist goodies into serving size pieces and all the gooey delight clung to the knife--instead of going into my mouth it went into the trash. When I take steps like this I realize all the extra calories I tend to put in my mouth unconsciously.

The writer's workshop was good. An interesting speaker who is an editor and author by the name of Chris Roerden. She talked about submitting your work and how to get it past the first "gatekeeper". She didn't offer gimmicky tips, but reminders to take care to watch out for the bad writing pitfalls that get your manuscript tossed into the reject pile.

I'm so glad I attended even though I had that headache. As an added bonus, I met new people and it looks like I may have an opportunity to do a book signing at the Harris Art Center. That would be great. It would be my first signing since the release of the revised edition of Pumping Your Muse with its new cover, and the first since Beyond the Fifth Gate came out!

I sympathize with those headaches. I get migraines when I back off the coffee. They are really miserable headpounders that linger for days.
Sugar makes me extremely sleepy. Don' know why. If I overindulge I get very sluggish, like I'm drugged.
I don't go there too often, but Halloween is one temptation that I just don't need.

Sounds like a cool writing group. Wish I had enough writers around here to start one up. Love the company. lol.
Good luck with the book signing.

Hi Raven,

I get migraines when I go off coffee too...which I am currently not drinking. However, I will still have a cup of coffee in the future as I recently bought an old fashioned coffee pot that peculates. :)

Our writing group has decided to do an anthology of pet stories (can also be stories of interaction with wild animals) and proceeds will go to the writing group. If you know any writers interested in writing a story for a contributor copy send them my way.

I also have an "antique" coffee pot. It's one of those old farber top stove pots. I have a fancy one but that one is collecting dust. See, our electricity kept going off a few years back and I dug this old pot out of storage and found it worked great on top of the wood stove. Something about a slow perk in this old pot makes the coffee fantastic! I stuck with it and use it now, on my ceramic top stove.

I'll pass the word about the pet stories. Any guidelines for word count or content? Chicken soup for the Dog Lover's Soul doesn't want stories about pet illness or death.

Hi Raven,

So how long does coffee perk? I was thinking it was like 3 or 5 minutes...but it's been ages since I perked coffee.

When I finish up the cleanse I'm on, I plan to have a cup of fresh perked coffee.

As for the anthology, you can find the guidelines here: http://anthologynewsandreviews.blogspot.com/

The lower the heat and the longer the boil, the more robust the coffee. The best I ever tasted from my pot came from an hour long wait, on low.(I was cleaning up the yard from winter storm debris) It was fantastic. I let it perk about twelve minutes.

It was heaven.
