Gluttony and Self Control

Most people know that portions served in restaurants are more food than they need to eat, but can you overeat on healthy foods? Yes. As I'm retraining my mind to make healthier choices, I realize that I'm eating too much. We wonder why 2/3 of our population are overweight; that's the reason.

It's easy to point fingers at people who drink too much, are too sedentary, shop too much, etc. But eating too much is socially acceptable. In fact it is encouraged at social gatherings. Pastors even make jokes about it from pulpits citing pot luck dinners and so-and-so's irresistible cooking, but Proverbs 23:20-21 warns us, "Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags." Proverbs 23:2 says, "put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony." Whoa, now that sounds pretty serious doesn't it?

As I think about it, physical appetites reflect our ability or inability to control ourselves. We're not supposed to let our appetites control us. Since it is Sunday, I thought I'd pass on these Scriptures as food for thought--the food to help us control our appetites.

*Deuteronomy 21:20
*Proverbs 23:2
*2 Peter 1:5-7
*2 Timothy 3:1-9
*2 Corinthians 10:5.

Lastly read Galatians 5:22 - self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit. Resting in the Spirit's power we will have the ability to say “no” to excess.

Gosh now you're giving me homework? lol (kidding)
Reading the Bible is never HOMEWORK, it's a part of life. :-)

So you need motivation?
Wake up every morning and say to yourself, "This is going to be an exceptional day of achievement."

And when you achieve one small task note that it was grand no matter what size the achievement was!
Whether you passed on an over indulging drink or pasta, or whether you said no I won't clean my plate off!

I heard that in China clearing your plate off is rude to the hostess. She feels that her meal wasn't filling enough. Maybe that is why the Chinese are not having an overweight problem like America. Americans always feel the need to clean the plate and go back for seconds. And then dessert!

6 small meals a day are more satisfying than 3 big meals. So cut back on calories (and carbs) with each of the meals and try healthy snacks that fool your body into feeling FULL!

Now maybe add some wrist weights to your walk? It will help with the toning of the arms.

I'm still proud of all that you are accomplishing! Keep it up and the rewards will be endless, all the way around!

godspeed...

I'm going to take a peek at those readings, Donna. Self control is something that includes many aspects of life, not only dieting. I've been good, although I ate some cake today because I missed it during the party. Wicked stuff. When I stay away from sugar for long periods of time, it tastes bad to me. Still, there's the occasional craving that comes knocking now and again.
Thanks for some resources. I like the idea of using the Bible for backup.

Great book. One I should read more often.

Hi Joni,

I learned that tidbit about China, too. Love all your motivational reminders. You are a great cheerleader!

Hi Raven,

Yes, self-control does touch many aspects of life. Over the years, I've learned to tackle different areas in my life that lack self-control. The areas that seem to be the most difficult for me along with exercise and diet, are keeping up with all the aspects of keeping the house tidy. :)

Lord, we won't even discuss household chores. My neglect of them has led me to this point--hiring a dumpster to remove the debris. I need to do it again for the attic.

Then, I shall be set FREE!

Does any of this count as weight loss?

Hi Raven,

That is a special kind of weight loss. Remind me someday and I'll tell you the story of how I removed almost a 100 pounds of stuff from my closet when I didn't have time to deal with it. It was actually like 89 pounds of stuff I got rid of from one closet!
